Local search

How to appear on Google Maps.

Direct answer

Google ranks the map pack on three factors: relevance, meaning whether your profile matches the search; distance from the searcher; and prominence, meaning how well known and well reviewed you are. You can influence the first and third. The second is geography, and no optimisation changes it.

Diagram on How to rank on Google Maps: primary category, distance to the searcher, reviews and activity and consistent business data
Relevance, distance and prominence decide the map pack; you control two of them.

Relevance starts with the primary category.

The primary category is the most influential field in the profile and the one most often set wrong. A business fitting three categories must still choose one as primary, and that choice should match what you most want to be found for.

After that, list your services completely and describe them in the words customers use. A profile with one category and no services listed gives Google almost nothing to match against. This is the core of Google Business Profile optimization.

Distance is the factor you cannot fix.

The map pack is calculated from where the searcher is standing, so your ranking changes street by street. A business two neighbourhoods away loses to an equivalent one nearby, consistently.

This is why checking your ranking from your own office is misleading: you are closest to yourself. Measuring local visibility properly means checking from several points across your actual service area.

Prominence is reviews, mentions and consistency.

Review volume, recency and your response rate all contribute, and the words inside reviews feed what Google understands about your services. A steady trickle of genuine reviews beats a burst of twenty followed by two years of silence.

Consistency of your name, address and phone number across the web matters more than most owners realise. Three slightly different versions across directories read as uncertainty about whether the business is real.

The shortcut that gets profiles suspended.

Listing an address in a city where you do not operate is a direct violation of Google guidelines and one of the most common causes of suspension. Virtual offices and a relative's address both count.

If you serve an area without a location in it, the correct structure is a declared service area with no street address shown. It feels weaker, it is honest, and it does not risk losing the profile entirely. We apply the same rule to our own location pages.
